Martin Luther King’s Persona as a Ghandi-type of Non-Violent Activist is a Myth

“If You Can’t Open Their Minds, Open Their Heads” will lead to “Push Comes to Shove” but “Violence is Not the Answer” so says Glenn Beck. But what about “Armed Self-Defense” and “The Common Defense” in the “Preamble to the Constitution of the United States?”

POINT

Glenn Beck’s November 22, 2010 show presented the lead-in quotation, “If You Can’t Open Their Minds, Open Their Heads” as the thesis for the show. That quotation is attributed to Ben Becker, editor of the Liberation Newspaper, speaking at the National Socialist Convention Strategy Session, in California. Ben Becker’s “fighting words” was picked up by bloggers far too many for me to list here. However, a few of the more significant articles from the blogoshere are noted here below.

Glenn Beck proclaims the same non-violent means as Martin Luther King. But there is something Glenn Beck doesn’t know about Martin Luther King, or does not want to tell you. I will tell you in MY POINT following the COUNTER-POINT below.

PSL Strategy: ‘Real answer to unemployment and war is socialism’
November 16th, 2010
By Devonia Smith, Political Transcripts Examiner

“The real answer to unemployment and war is socialism,” wasn’t the strongest statement made at the National Socialist Convention Strategy Session, in California, in a speech by Ben Becker, editor of the Liberation Newspaper, from a militant anti-Tea Party, Party for Socialism and Liberation, just mildly noteworthy.

This chilling strategy session actually divided America into good people and bad people:

•Socialists are good

•Fascist, racist Tea Party members are bad

•Disappointing Democrats are to be tolerated as the lesser of evils – usable but unreliable

Some of the socialist issues, heavily pondered, during that strategy session included:

•Calling for a head-cracking revolution

•Recruiting and organizing backwards white workers

•Countering Tea Party fascists

•How to redirect poor working class racists and bigots to their own struggles away from fear of immigrants and Muslims

•Overcoming racism as the biggest obstacle to working class unity

TRANSCRIPT
Following is the transcript from the audio of Ben Becker’s speech:

In times of growth historically the Democrats were the party who wanted to, at least mildly, redistribute a little bit of wealth. Like they were willing to finance a few social programs, make a few concessions on the interest of preserving social peace and social stability. But now, when they don’t feel like that money is available for them to distribute, they don’t do anything. And I think that, you know that, when we talk about what will raise people’s consciousness, we also want to fight people. So I think it’s like both things.

We want to fight people who are signed up on the other side of the barricade who are fighting us. We are a militant organization when it comes to fighting against bigotry, fights against racism and sexism.

The labor movement has this old saying, I don’t know, is, “If you can’t open their minds, open their heads.” [audience laughter] Now I don’t know if we want to take it quite that far on all the issues. I think that we have to be fighters — I’m serious in some ways. If we’re not fighters we’re not going to recruit the people who are most affected by these injustices because they’re the ones who want to fight. And especially if you point to the Tea Party, right? This was the Democratic Party platform during the elections was to whip everybody up into the fear of the Tea Party, in order to go – hold your tongue, hold your nose, and vote Democratic because the Tea Party is just so awful. And obviously the Tea Party is awful. The Tea Party sometimes does look like a white supremacist mob and you know the logic of the Democrats which is sort of like, well this mob is coming are you really going to fight with us? At least we’re against them. Then Vote for Us!

That’s a logic that has a strong appeal or a sensitive appeal among working class. Nonetheless, we went to that demonstration in full force. We brought our friends, our contacts, we tried to organize busses from schools. We passed out anti-war, anti-racist signs and literature; and we brought very clear anti-capitalist literature, fliers, newspapers that said the real answer to unemployment and war is socialism.

It would have been a mistake to abstain, to have not gone to that rally simply because the Democrats were behind it. For the workers that came that day, they came to be a counter example, a counterpoint, a counter balance to Glenn Beck and the Tea Party racists who claim to speak for the country.

So under those circumstances you have to be with them. You have to be with those people who want to fight back. In some way the Tea Party just gives a name to those 20% of older white, often racist, conservative people that have always existed in the country. By calling the Tea Party a bunch of grumpy old racists, which you know we can do, and it’s not far from the truth, or [passive(?)] who are playing games for Wall Street also not far from the truth, even those descriptions don’t really get to understand, don’t misunderstand what is their appeal. Now in this country there are already are fascist-like forms of this state that are being put on African-Americans communities, what is your occupation of the hood if not that. And what are actually conferred if not fascistic tendencies, right?

So I think we want to be aware of that dimension of the issues. There’s nothing about bushwhack democracy. They’re not actually that attached to the idea of democracy if push comes to shove.

But I also say it because I have seen the record. SEIU just in the last year has a history of violence against the Tea Parties. They beat up a black man in, where was that, St. Louis? They bit off a finger of a protester, physical intimidation, I mean what was it, Andy Stern said, we know where they live. SDS has a history of violence from the 1960’s with the Weather Underground. The same SDS members, they were doing that, this same group started a new SDS. And on their first visible outing they have arrests while shouting at the pigs.

You know what? I challenge SEIU to have their members sign a pledge of non-violence and actually mean it. I’d like to see the pledge of non-violence and the Christian values of SDS, the new one. Of course I’d have a hard time taking it seriously since SDS and SEIU members believe in Sal Alinsky who taught the ends justify the means so that’s a credibility problem there.

The throwing of the water bottles in Arizona, just a tip of the iceberg, we’ve seen what radical groups did in the past. They got violent. “Recreate ’68” some of their slogans. Now these same radicals are teaching our kids how to do it again. Don’t disregard the warning signs. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. That’s what I would tell you. But actually I’ve been reading C. S. Lewis and we’re going to talk about it a little later. I’ve been reading The Screw Tape Letters.[1] He said hope and fear are really the same. It’s only when there is despair that it requires someone to rely on God. Don’t get to despair before you relay on God.

There needs to be an awakening. In every great moment in this country’s history there was an awakening and an enlightenment. The enlightenment brought us Martin Luther King. It brought us George Washington. It brought us Abraham Lincoln. We’re not there yet. We’re at the awakening. It can be violent or it can be peaceful. Let’s wake up American peacefully, together.

[1]The Screw Tape Letters, by C. S. Lewis, is a book on a theoretical conversation between two demons as they discuss the best ways to draw man away from “the other side.”

No one has preached on TV or radio more than me that violence is not the answer. The reason why I’ve been doing it for so long is because I was telling you about the finance collapse two years before anybody else. When I preach about it and I say listen, you’ve got to batten down the hatches. You have to be a good person. You have to get right with God. You got to get back to church because trouble is coming. When I say that the leftists and all their media organs they all speculate why would Glenn Beck have to say that unless his crazy viewers weren’t one push away from a shooting spree? Well, I say that for the exact same reason Martin Luther King said that. You’d think that the people who started [a new incarnation of] SDS on January 16, 2006, Martin Luther King Day, might remember what Martin Luther King did. King knew. King new that he was being set up.

I say it for the same reason that the left said it with their MAP steps for social movements that we showed you last week. It’s a human condition. And when you think you’re losing and your back is up against the wall you push back and that’s a mistake. As soon as anyone does that — not only is it just plain wrong but you destroy the movement — you lose. Martin Luther King knew that and so do I.

Compare Glenn Beck’sPrepare for the worst and hope for the best” with George Washington’s 1782 quotation: If we are wise let us prepare for the worst.” There are striking differences between Glenn Beck and George Washington in how to prepare for the worst. George Washington took up arms as a wise move for the defense of freedom. Glenn Beck would kneel down in hope and prayer’s that the worst will not come. Common sense dictates George Washington’s choice is the only sensible choice.

Communist In The Mirror Is Closer Than You Think
November 17, 2010
The Washington Rebel

If there is any doubt that Communism is alive and well in the United States, one should take a trip to The Blaze, Glenn Beck’s news site, and scroll down a bit. There are videos of your neighbors saying “Yo soy un communista” They are coming out of the closet. But, why now?

The obvious answer is because they did not get the change they voted for. Their understanding of the change Barack Obama represented was socialism leading to communism. With hopes fading that Obama will make good on his pledge to “fundamentally transform America,” they intend to take what little momentum is left and call on the moochers and looters to make good on their stated ideology of overthrowing the capitalist society of America.

They had waited since 1917 for the moment that Barack Obama represented. Through all of the other times, the Great Depression and the 1960s enlightenment, they had not progressed as far as they would have liked, but all of that changed in November of 2008 with the election of one of their own. He was a Marxist, a labor union sympathizer, an ACORN lawyer and a follower of the Black Evolution Theology leader Jeremiah Wright. What more could a communist look for in a president? They were assured that soon the United States would be delivered into their hands. They would drown the dreaded capitalist in their own soup!

It looked good at first. Obama came to power at time when corporations and banks were suspect, when huge companies teetered on the edge of collapse, giving the excuse to “nationalize” these corporations under the guise of “saving” them. It was perfect.

And then, on the brink of victory, the Tea Party rose up out of the masses and dashed their hopes. The Tea Party made passing Obamacare, the key to the socialist puzzle, problematic. It would take force and SEIU, the soviet muscle behind the president would have to mobilize. This was good from a communist’s point of view: it would show the Tea Partyists the strength built into the labor unions. “If you can’t change their minds, break their heads.” The communists looked forward to the idea of inciting these Tea Party fools into a conflict, to brand them as radical and allow for the real muscle, the cops and FBI to do the dirty work of clearing out the rabble delaying their 100 year dream from coming true.

The Tea Party didn’t take the bait, but used the ubiquitous video camera to their advantage and captured the brutal tactics of the labor unions on film to be quickly transferred to a waiting and curious public. Ah ha! Leftist violence on camera, and the tables started to turn. It was harder for politicians to support their own supporters. It all got difficult for the media to spin the Tea Partyists as violent racists. The narrative was being lost.

While the president held onto the reins of congress they managed to push the dreaded legislation through, giving the communists a brief sigh of relief and a positive gleaming of sunshine before the dark clouds of the November 2010 election rose up to smite them back into the closet, back under the rock. They see the possibilities dimming as conservatives surge to the fore.

Collectively (appropriately so) they have decided they cannot give up the gains made by Barack Obama. They cannot let their supporters go back under cover for another decade. They have decided that now is the time to make the push. Just as many Constitutionalists realize that now is the best time to push for an opportunity to roll back the socialist agenda, the communists see now as the best time to strike while they have a defined enemy: the Tea Party. They have the support of the Islamists, the labor unions, the illegal aliens, the socialists and the vast sea of government employees and dependent classes to aid their struggle.

As one of their minions said in the Blaze videos “Bring It On!”

COUNTER-POINT

At Gad-fly (blogger), July 2, 2010 posted this article, Right to Bear Arms: A Critical Part of Black American History:

Over the next hundred years, black Americans struggled mightily for equal footing until the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s brought about a new direction for minorities. The renowned leader of that movement was, of course, Martin Luther King, Jr. but the movement was supported by many black organizations. Dymphna at Gates of Vienna remembers the Deacons for Defense and Justice.

The Deacons for Defense and Justice, a group of blacks in the South who believed in armed self-defense against an entrenched hatred that often led to killings of innocent black people, particularly black men.

The myth of Martin Luther King’s touted “non-violence” as a way to bring about justice steadfastly ignores the reality of King’s armed body guards and the arsenal of weapons kept in his home – kept there illegally, by the way. Dr. King couldn’t get a gun permit.

Given the times, King’s public image as the American Gandhi was probably good strategy; it reassured the fearful white majority and no doubt prevented much bloodshed. However, the armed “Deacons of Defense” were as vital and necessary a part of the struggle as was Dr. King’s approach.

An isolated farm surrounded by the sudden arrival of truckloads of hatred in the middle of the night could change the equation instantly with the judicious application of one shot over the heads of those hate-mongers. It didn’t solve the problem instantly, but it allowed enough time for the troublemakers to sober up. One armed black farmer lived to plow another day.

Now we know that King’s “non-violence” was a necessary charade. So also was the myth that M.L. King was “Moses” leading the flock. For example it was not MLK’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) that launched the “Freedom Rides” in 1961; it was the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) that did the organizing. Acceptance of King and his policy was also not universal.

Privately, King’s supporters knew that non-violence was not an outlook everyone shared, and [aide Wyatt] Walker amused King by telling him of how one black Virginian had responded to a white bus driver who wanted him to enter his bus by the back door. A massive figure, the man had picked up the driver with one hand and said bluntly: ‘Know two things. I can break your neck, and I ain’t one of Martin Luther King’s non-violent Negroes.’ [Ed. note: It is hard to believe “Negroes” was the word used when this tale was told in the ’60s. This is almost certainly BBC political correctness.]

The armed Deacons for Defense had 21 organizations scattered throughout the South keeping KKK counter-insurgency at bay. In 1966, King was challenged by a militant Malcom X and the “Black Power” movement.

Liberals will argue that M.L. King’s leadership and nonviolence was the reason for the success of the Civil Rights Movement. They will point out that ready access to guns resulted in Rev. King’s assassination in Memphis by a racist white man. That argument aside, it is clear in retrospect that without access to firearms by blacks, the establishment of racial equality in the 1960s would most likely have failed.

MY POINT

Here I present a point, counter-point to Glenn Beck’s oft-spoken belief in non-violence justified by the examples presented by Martin Luther King Sr.’s false image of a Ghandi-type non-violence civil rights activist. However, the counter-point to this belief is that Martin Luther King’s reputation and belief in non-violence is a myth for image sake because the truth is Martin Luther King believed in and exercised his Second Amendment right to armed self-defense as exhibited by his employment of the Deacons for Defense and Justice.

Does Glenn Beck subscribe to a pacifist form of Christianity? Perhaps Glenn Beck should read these Bible versus:

Warnings of Government Genocide — 2nd Kings 19:32-34 “Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it. By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD. For I will defend this city, to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.”

Corruption — Ecclesiastes 3:16-17 “And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, that wickedness was there; and the place of righteousness, that iniquity was there. I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.”

Corruption/Bribery — Isaiah 1:23-26 “Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.” Therefore saith the LORD, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies: And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin: And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counselors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.”

The Corrupted Receives Justice – Job 20:24-25 “He shall flee from the iron weapon, and the bow of steel shall strike him through. It is drawn, and cometh out of the body; yea, the glittering sword cometh out of his gall: terrors are upon him.”

Defending Against Government Abuses — Jeremiah 5:20-31 “Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not, which have ears, and hear not: Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it? But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone. Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD or God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us appointed weeks of the harvest. Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you. For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men. As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich. They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge. Shall I not visit for these things? Saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land; the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?”

Malicious Prosecution — Psalms 59:1-5 “Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me. Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men. For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: they mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O LORD. They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold. Thou therefore, O LORD God of hosts, the god of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen: be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah.”

Illegal Use of Weapons — Numbers 35:18 “Or if he smite him with an hand weapon of wood, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

Militias — Ecclesiastes 4:12-13 “And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.”

Defending the Church with Weapons — 2 Chronicles 23:10 “And he set all the people, every man having his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the temple to the left side of the temple, along by the altar and the temple, by the king round about.”

Weapons in the Workplace — Nehemiah 4:17 “They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.”

Lawlessness Without The Sword — Deuteronomy 32:25. “The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also, with the man of grey hairs.”

Weapons Manufacturing & Defense Against Persecution — Isaiah 54:16-17 “Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy. No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.”

The Slaughter Weapon – (Sword v. Full-Auto Firearms) — Ezekiel 9:1-2 “He cried also in mine ears with a loud voice, saying, Cause them that have charge over the city to draw near, even every man with his destroying weapon in his hand. And behold, six men came from the way of the higher gate, which lieth toward the north, and every man a slaughter weapon in his hand; and one man among them was clothed with linen, with a writer’s inkhorn by his side: and they went in, and stood beside the brasen altar.”

Facing Your Enemy — Deuteronomy 20:1 When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the Lord thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

War — Exodus 15:3 “The LORD is a man of war : the LORD is his name.”

The Lord as a Warrior — Joshua 5:13 “And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? And the captain of the LORD’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.”

Standing Watch — Zechariah 9:8 “And I will encamp about mine house because of the army, because of him that passeth by, and because of him that returneth: and no oppressor shall pass through them any more: for now have I seen with mine eyes.”

Keeping Firearms Out of the Hands of Children (Teens)
Defies Religious Teachings of the Bible

The Story of David and Goliath

Weapons Training For Children – 1 Samuel 17:39-40 “And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him. And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling* was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.”; 1 Samuel 17:49 “And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.”**

*And his sling. In Adam Clarke’s Commentary: “The sling, both among the Greeks and Hebrews, has been a powerful offensive weapon. See what has been said on Judg. XX. 16. It is composed of two strings and a leathern strap; the strap is in the middle, and is the place where the stone or bullet lies. The string on the right end of the strap is firmly fastened to the hand; that on the left is held between the thumb and middle joint of the fore finger. It is then whirled two or three times round the head; and when discharge, the finger and thumb let go their hold of the left end string. The velocity and force of the sling are in proportion to the distance of the strap, where the bullet lies, from the shoulder joint. Hence the ancient Baleares, or inhabitants of Majorca and Minorca, are said to have had three slings of different lengths, the longest they used when the enemy was at the greatest distance; the middle one, on their nearer approach; and the shortest, when they came into the ordinary fighting distance in the field. The shortest is the most certain, though not the most powerful. The Balearians are said to have had one of their slings constantly bound about the head, to have used the second as a girdle, and to have carried the third always in their hand.

In the use of the sling it requires much practice to hit the mark; but when once this dexterity is acquired, the sling is nearly as fatal as the musket or bow; see on ver. 49. David was evidently an expert marksman; and his sling gave him greatly the advantage over Goliath; an advantage of which the giant does not seem to have been aware. He could hit him within any speaking distance; if he missed once, he had as many chances as he had stones; and after all, being unencumbered with armour, young, and athletic, he could have saved his life by flight. Against him the Philistine could do but little, except in close fight; it is true he appears to have had a javelin or missile spear, (see on ver. 6, ) but David took care to prevent the use of all such weapons, by giving him the first blow.”

**In Adam Clarke’s Commentary, . . . “The Baleares, in time of war, sling greater stones than any other people, and with such force, that they seem as if projected from a catapult. . . . Therefore, in assaults made on fortified towns, they grievously wound the besieged; and in battle they break in pieces, the shields, helmets, and every species of armour, by which the body is defended. And they are such exact marksmen that they scarcely ever miss that at which they aim.”

The historian accounts for their great accuracy and power in the use of the sling, from this circumstance: . . . “They attain to this perfection by frequent exercise from their childhood; for while they are young and under their mother’s care, they are obliged to learn to sling; for they fasten bread for a mark at the top of a pole; and till the child hit the bread he must remain fasting; and when he has hit it, the mother gives it to him to eat.”

“I [Adam Clarke] have given these passages at large, because they contain several curious facts, and sufficiently account for the force and accuracy with which David slung his stone at Goliath. We find also in the . . ., not miss the mark, of the historian, the true notion of . . ., to sin, which I have contended for elsewhere. He who sins, though he aims thereby at his gratification and profit, misses the mark of present and eternal felicity.”

The Hypocrites – Isaiah 33:14-15, 18. “The sinners in Zion are afrain; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil; . . . Thine heart shall meditate terror. Where is the scribe? Where is the receiver? Where is he that counted the towers?

Adam Clarke’s Commentary: [The sinners in Zion are afraid] Zion has been generally considered as a type of the Church of God. Now all the members of God’s Church should be holy, and given to good works; sinners in Zion therefore, are portentous beings! But, alas! Where are they not? The Targum on this verse is worthy of notice: “The sinners in Zion are broken down; fear hath seized the ungodly, who are suffering for their ways. They say, Who among us shall dwell in Zion, where the splendour of the Divine Majesty is like a consuming fire? Who of us shall dwell in Jerusalem, where the ungodly are judged and delivered into hell for an eternal burning?” [Where is the scribe?] The person appointed by the king of Assyria to estimate their number and property in reference to their being heavily taxed. [Where is the receiver?] Or he who was to have collected this tribute. [Where is he that counted the towers?] That is, the commander of the enemy’s forces, who surveyed the fortifications of the city, and took an account of the height, strength, and situation of the walls and towers that he might know where to make the assault with the greatest advantage; . . . .”
